ES Principal's Welcome

Darren Barlow

It is with great pride that I write to you as the Elementary Principal at the American School of Yaoundé. This is my fifth year as Elementary Principal at this school and my 15th year as a Principal and my 25th year in the teaching profession. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to our new families and students and the new staff who have also arrived for the new academic year.

At our school, we pride ourselves on being very family-orientated, where the student's best interests are at the heart of all our decisions. This includes offering a vibrant, innovative and rigorous education, aligned with the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP).

Our students are provided with the basis for an inspiring and challenging education that develops a love of learning, whilst at the same time, ensuring that they have the knowledge, skills and values to cope with a rapidly changing and sometimes unstable world.

All our teachers are highly qualified and truly passionate and committed to developing exciting and stimulating lessons that not only engage students but encourages them to inquire and to learn more about the world around them. Our students are also challenged by our teachers and the community to do their best and to care for one another at all times.

At ASOY, education is viewed as a partnership in which parents and the school work closely together to ensure that the students are able to be confident, knowledgeable, responsible, and caring citizens. Our open-door policy gives parents the opportunity to take part in their children’s education, either through planned events or more informal gatherings.

We look forward to welcoming you to our school and the opportunity for you to see the PYP in action!
