Welcome to the American School of Yaounde. Founded in 1964, ASOY serves the community in Yaoundé, Cameroon through example and service as a beacon of educational excellence. Our mission is to ensure that all students achieve high academic success, develop critical thinking skills, and become responsible, compassionate, and global citizens.
Both the Council of International Schools (CIS) in Europe and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA) accredits the school. We follow an American curriculum with an international focus, and Advanced Placement (AP) courses in high school enable graduates to attend the world's leading universities. ASOY is an active member of the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA), and is governed by an eight-member school board elected by the Parent Association.
We place great importance on academic excellence and on the social and emotional development of our students. Our broad and balanced program is grounded in our mission and objectives, and we strive to integrate the 6 Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship) into all areas of the school.
This year also marks exciting new phases to life at ASOY. Our 'Hands Across Cameroon' is our service-learning program, which is run throughout the school. ASOY is committed to providing meaningful opportunities for our staff and students to support members of the wider Yaoundé community. In doing so, to offer enriching experiences to those less fortunate than us which are mutually beneficial. ASOY is also committed to bringing the latest technology to our students and staff; we have completely overhauled our 2 IT labs and ultimately plan to adopt a 1:1 laptop program for students, for 2012. Academically, ASOY implemented the 'Block Schedule" this year and added an additional foreign language, Spanish. We continue to strive to enhance the education our students receive.
Every year, we welcome many new faces that bring a wealth of experience and varied perspectives to our school. ASOY is a dynamic, challenging, and caring learning community, and our goal is to promote the academic achievement and overall well being of our students.
