Counseling

The mission of the American School of Yaounde counseling program is to provide a comprehensive program that develops a positive learning experience for all students. The program addresses students, teachers, and parents in academic, social and emotional goals. The counselor will provide a variety of services and activities, including individual and group counseling, classroom guidance, referral assistance to outside agencies and parent/teacher consultation.

The role of the school counselor is to be an advocate for all students by enhancing a caring, and collaborative environment. This advocacy will promote a positive academic environment for students to be successful. The school counselor is is partnership with the administration, teachers, parents, and the community to support students. This partnership will help students have opportunities to gain knowledgeable, reflective, and open-minded skills to become responsible lifelong learners.

The counseling program also provides the middle and high school students with an advisory course, that focuses on social emotional life skills. The advisors are teachers who create a bond with their students through weekly advisory classes. Advisors play a valuable role in our educational program, delivering curriculum developed to extend the social and emotional side of our school’s mission. Developing close bonds with each advisee and maintaining an awareness of what is happening in each of their lives is the essence of what it means to be an advisor. Just as with classroom teaching, specific requirements are kept to a minimum in order to allow each advisor to advise in his or her own best style. At the same time, a few minimal expectations are necessary to ensure a shared degree of effectiveness.
